\"elefantaki<\/a>Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae \u00a0and the order Proboscidea.
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

They scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia.
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

The word “elephant” is based on the Latin\u00a0elephantus<\/i>\u00a0(“elephant”), which is the Latinised\u00a0form of the Greek\u00a0\u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03c6\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<\/p>\n

Elephants have been represented in art since\u00a0Paleolithic\u00a0times.<\/p>\n

Africa in particular contains many rock paintings and engravings of the animals, especially in the\u00a0Sahara\u00a0and southern Africa.\u00a0In the\u00a0Far East, the animals are depicted as\u00a0motifs\u00a0in\u00a0Hindu\u00a0and\u00a0Buddhist\u00a0shrines and temples.<\/p>\n

Elephants were often difficult to portray by people with no first-hand experience with them.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0ancient Romans, who kept the animals in captivity, depicted anatomically accurate elephants on\u00a0mosaics\u00a0in\u00a0Tunisia\u00a0and Sicily.<\/p>\n

At the beginning ofMiddle Ages, when Europeans had little to no access to the animals, elephants were portrayed more like fantasy creatures\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Elephants have been the subject of religious beliefs. The\u00a0Mbuti people\u00a0believe that the souls of their dead ancestors resided in elephants.\u00a0Similar ideas existed among other African tribes, who believed that their chiefs would be\u00a0reincarnated\u00a0as elephants.<\/p>\n

Whatever the truth is, elephants are \u00a0indeed sacred creatures and they need to live far away from hunters.<\/p>\n

One wooden elephant was brought to us by a traveller friend who wanted \u00a0us to coat it with shiny metal and make his traveling memories stay with him forever!<\/p>\n
