\"Dragon<\/a><\/p>\n

A dragon\u00a0is a\u00a0legendary creature, typically with\u00a0serpentine\u00a0or\u00a0reptilian\u00a0traits, that features in the\u00a0myths\u00a0of many cultures.<\/p>\n

There are two distinct cultural traditions of dragons: the European dragon, derived from European folk traditions and ultimately related to Greek and Middle Eastern mythologies, and the\u00a0Chinese dragon, with counterparts in Japan, Korea and other East Asian countries.<\/p>\n

The two traditions may have evolved separately, but have influenced each other to a certain extent, particularly with the cross-cultural contact of recent centuries. The English word”dragon”\u00a0derives from\u00a0Greek\u00a0\u03b4\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd\u00a0(dr\u00e1k\u014dn<\/i>), “dragon, serpent of huge size, water-snake”.
\n<\/sup><\/p>\n

The word\u00a0dragon<\/i>\u00a0entered the English language in the early 13th century from Old French\u00a0dragon<\/i>, which in turn comes from Latin\u00a0draconem<\/i>\u00a0(nominative\u00a0draco<\/i>) meaning “huge serpent, dragon,” from the Greek word \u03b4\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03c9\u03bd,\u00a0drakon<\/i>\u00a0(genitive\u00a0drakontos<\/i>, \u03b4\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bf\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2) “serpent, giant seafish”.<\/p>\n

The Greek and Latin term referred to any great serpent, not necessarily mythological, and this usage was also current in English up to the 18th century.<\/p>\n

Apart from all this history, we love them for another reason as well.<\/p>\n

We all know the best-selling books (a dance with dragons) of the famous TV series Game Of Thrones, where Daenerys Targaryen tries to take back the throne\u00a0with her dragons and bring peace and order to the seven kingdoms.<\/p>\n
